This past Saturday, members of the National Cartoonists Society’s Great Lakes Chapter assembled in downtown Cleveland to toast Chip Sansom, and his late father Art, on the 50th anniversary of their comic strip “The Born Loser!”
Chip is a dear friend, wonderfully talented cartoonist, and a lifelong Clevelander. He’s drawn “The Born Loser” comic strip since the 1980s. First with his dad, then continuing it solely since 1991 (after Art’s passing).
Chip draws the strip and his wife and daughter help with writing and computer/technical duties.
I need to mention and express my gratitude to Art Sansom. Not only was he enthusiastically supportive of my cartooning career, he’s the reason why I’m a member of the National Cartoonists Society! I spent many a Saturday visiting Art at his home studio where he graciously and patiently critiqued my work giving me pointers and encouragement.
So , when the event was announced, I made sure to be in attendance! Everyone had a wonderful time saluting Chip, his dad, and the strip.
Chairman Poly Keener organized a really wonderful outing. it started out with a tour of the beautiful Cleveland Public Library and then wrapped up with a luncheon honoring Chip and “The Bron Loser” at the historic Cleveland Arcade. Ifyou live in Northeast Ohio, or are planning a visit to Cleveland, both of these historic buildings are a must see!
Finally, Amazon has copies of the most recent book collection of “The Born Loser” comic strips.
