Mell Lazarus passed away on May 24th. He was the best. He was accomplished and loved. Many remember him as a cartoonist, humorist, writer, and novelist. But all will undoubtedly remember him as a true gentleman. He had a kind heart and a generous spirit. He was well-liked and admired by his cartooning peers. He was genial and warm. Look up the word “gregarious” and you’ll see Mell’s picture.
The National Cartoonists Society hands out many awards for cartooning achievement. I haven’t had the honor of winning any of those awards. However, for me, the greatest award and honor was being Mell’s friend.
I miss him.
